Dragonfly by Alyssa Thiessen.Audience/Genre: New Adult, Paranormal.
Publication: February 6th 2016 by Peasantry Press.
Eighteen-year-old Joshua Miller is great at being invisible, despite the four, large, insect-like wings protruding from his back and his knack for high-rise robberies. He can remember almost nothing of his life before Nik found him and taught him his trade. Now he’s alone, and he likes it that way.
When Joshua unexpectedly meets Lexi on a job, his simple, uncomplicated existence shifts. Although he intends to remain uninvolved, something about her captivates him and he begins to let her in. As he navigates the strange nuances of a relationship with a girl as desperate to be different as he is to be ordinary, he becomes increasingly aware that he is not who he wants to be for her. Confronted by the past he’d forgotten and a family he didn’t know existed, Joshua must decide for himself where he belongs and who holds the key to his future.
Guest Post - Music and Dragonfly
Most of the songs that inspired me when I was writing Dragonfly are pretty mellow. There are a few really intense scenes in the book, of course, but I didn’t choose songs for those moments because I wanted to focus to be on the sound of the scene itself – breaking glass, for instance, or the clanging of metal or the thud of a body hitting the ground. The playlist I created for my novel highlights the most uplifting moments of the book, instead. I think the beginning of the novel in particular can be a little dark, but the music to accompany it isn’t, because I wanted the music to reflect the heart of the story – that love finds a way of bringing light.
Official Music Playlist for Dragonfly:
For my Dragonfly playlist, I chose five songs I love, that fit with the tone and theme of my novel.
1) Boat Song, by JJ Heller: This song is for the scenes where Joshua and Lexi are just getting to know each other. When they're hanging out at her place, when they're building trust. Before she knows what he is, of course.
2) Brown Eyed Girl, by Van Morrison: This song has special significance to Lexi. She mentions it when she's sharing a little about her childhood with Joshua.
3) Like I'm Gonna Lose You, by Meghan Trainor: This one's for the night Lexi really understand that Joshua needs to leave her. But it doesn't - it can't - change the way she feels. "I'm gonna love you, like I'm gonna lose you, I'm gonna hold you like I'm saying goodbye."
4) Hiding place, by Hedley: I admit it - I'm a big Hedley fan. The upbeat, melodic Hiding Place would be perfect for Joshua's final flight. I don't really want to say more than that, because I don't want to give the ending away. Conversely, the slow, beautiful I Won't Let You Go (also by Hedley) would also work there.
5) Limitless, by Colton Dixon - This song could accompany the last scene of the book, especially the chorus. Really beautiful, totally perfect.

When she's not donning her secret identity and saving the world, Thiessen keeps busy writing her next novel, reading something beautiful, teaching high school English, drinking coffee, cycling, and hanging out with her family - husband, kiddies, and miniature schnauzer.
